Is GST Mandatory?
- For Sole Proprietorships and Partnerships: GST is mandatory.
- For all other business types: GST is optional.
Note: The IEC can serve as an alternative if you do not have a GST Certificate for Sole Proprietorships and Partnerships.
Additional Document Requirements:
If you are registering as a Partnership or Sole Proprietorship and do not have both GST and IEC, then you need to provide any 3 of the following documents:
- Udyam Registration Certificate (all pages)
- Certificate/License issued by municipal authorities under the Shop and Establishment Act
- Certificate/Registration Document issued by Sales Tax/Service Tax/Professional Tax authorities (within the last 12 months)
- Utility Bills (such as electricity, water, landline telephone bills) in the trade name of the business (within the last 3 months)
Do Sole Proprietorships/Partnerships Need GST Even if Revenue is Below the Threshold?
Yes, according to the GST Act, any entity involved in exporting goods or services is required to obtain a GST number, regardless of whether their revenue falls below the GST threshold.
